In 2011 the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection removed televisions as an item that may be placed in the solid waste stream in an effort to further protect our environment. The older TV's contain cathode tubes that are a potential danger to our landfills and are being transported to an approved site for dismantling. The weight from the televisions removed from the bulky trash is also a cost savings to the Township in the amount that is paid for refuse disposal.
The Township has arranged for Suburban Disposal, the current hauler for refuse and recycling for West Orange, to provide an additional collection for televisions at no cost to the taxpayers. Instead of the televisions being collected with bulky trash, residents may call Suburban Disposal at 973-227-7020 to be placed on a list for collection at the curb every Tuesday. Your address must be on the list for the truck to come to your home.
Residents may also bring a television to the West Orange Environmental Center located at 590 Mt. Pleasant Avenue if they choose. This Township facility is open Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 4:30 pm and Saturday 7:30 am - 4:00 pm.
COMPUTERS AND SMALL ELECTRONICS
Since 2010 the Environmental Center located at 590 Mt. Pleasant Avenue has been accepting computers and small electronics. Computer Towers, Laptops and Monitors may not be placed in the garbage and must be brought to this Township facility for disposal. Computers may also be brought to the Essex County Computer Recycling days when announced. As with televisions these computer components are being brought to an approved site that is deconstructing these devices that contain potentially harmful elements if placed in our landfills. Small electronic items are also accepted on a voluntary basis. This waste is also being processed at no cost to the taxpayers.
DONATE REUSABLE ITEMS
Before disposing of working items consider donating them to someone that may be able to use them or to Goodwill and the Salvation Army.
