Recent changes in state law require local police departments to fulfill obligations pertaining to the identification and maintenance of records relating to convicted sex offenders. This procedure is quite complex in nature and requires consultation with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and a yearly review of our own departmental records, as well as obtaining fingerprints from the registered offenders.

Uniform Crime Report

During the course of investigations, it becomes necessary to change uniform crime report (UCR) classifications. Each investigator faced with this situation notifies the Record Bureau for the appropriate changes so that accurate statistics can be forwarded to the New Jersey State Police and a complete and accurate UCR report can be issued.

Municipal Forfeiture Program
This area includes the identification of assets uncovered during investigations that may be subject to civil forfeiture. Proper paperwork must be completed and forwarded to the Essex County prosecutor’s office for formal review and action. A quarterly report is prepared and forwarded to the New Jersey attorney general's office as well as the Essex County prosecutor’s office Forfeiture Section. Additionally, new regulations are developed pertaining to the forfeiture program and are implemented on a timely basis with the West Orange Police Department.

Traces for Recovered Firearms

A new program is under development by the Essex County prosecutor’s office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms that requires the completion and submission of certain reports to both agencies. The Detective Bureau is responsible for side reports and the forwarding of same.
